AUDITIONS FOR VELVET SWING
Umbrella Collective seeks performer to join the ensemble for VELVET SWING performing in April 2019 at Bryant-Lake Bowl in Minneapolis. Help us find our missing Florence!
Project Description
Inspired by the notorious tale of Evelyn Nesbit, the original 19th Century supermodel and leading lady of the “Crime of The Century,” VELVET SWING focuses on truth and testimony, choice and circumstance, and the question of who owns a story. Based on the August 2017 workshop presentation. (Press about the workshop presentation: 1, 2) Content information: This production has themes of violence, sexism, alcohol, sexual assault, and trauma. It also includes live music, light vaudeville acts, and a (not real) snake named "Baby". Most recent draft of the script is available upon request.
Ensemble / Role Description
The cast features 5 performers playing the role of Florence (4 precast, all Florences play multiple storytelling roles) and 1 performing musician (precast). Cast includes: Natavia Lewis, Jessie Scarborough-Ghent, Mickaylee Shaughnessy, Antonia Perez, and Michelle Hernick.
The purpose of this audition notice is to re-cast 1 Florence role. Nonbinary, transgender, and cisgender performers that are interested in playing a cisgender woman character are encouraged to audition. Singing ability of any genre or style is a plus, but not required.
Remaining Rehearsal Schedule
Most rehearsals will take place at SpringHouse Ministry Center (610 W 28th St, Minneapolis, MN 55408) and Bryant-Lake Bowl (810 W Lake St, Minneapolis, MN 55408). We are able to make some accommodations for previously scheduled conflicts. Please feel free to reach out to hello@umbrellaco.org with scheduling questions.
Performances (7:00 PM shows, 90 minute maximum runtime)
Compensation
There will be a stipend of $700 for this project. Though Umbrella Collective's coffers may lack in size, what we have, we have to share, and we always have the priority of making artist pay the largest part of any project's budget.

Audition Information
- When: Tuesday, February 26, 2019 from 6:30 - 9:30 PM (30 minute small group audition slots)
- Where: SpringHouse Ministry Center (610 W 28th St, Minneapolis, MN 55408)
- Parking: There are very minimal parking spots in the SpringHouse parking lot. Please plan to utilize free street parking in the surrounding blocks. If you park in the SpringHouse parking lot, do not park in any spot that is not specifically designated for SpringHouse. We don't want you to get towed!
- What: No preparation necessary. Performers will likely participate in some group activity and script reading with members of the cast. (These auditions will feel casual. We try to make auditions fun, and we're excited to meet you!)
- Wear: Please dress for movement.
