In Rapture, a tenth of the world’s population suddenly disappears. This isn’t a biblical event. It is pieced together that all those who vanished were, in some fashion, artists. The media dubs the event, “The Artists’ Rapture.” Two of those left behind are Evelyn and Lucy, a grandmother and granddaughter. Evelyn is a commercially successful painter. Lucy is a post-college artist trying to figure out who she is and what/why she wants to create. They are both left wondering, “Why wasn’t I taken in the Rapture?” Joining Evelyn and Lucy: the alcoholic specter of controversial artist Thomas Kinkade and a young, enthusiastic art appreciator, Eddie.

Rapture explores what defines art and what it means to be an artist. “These are huge issues, and the idea of an ‘artists’ rapture’ is big,” says Tanner Curl, head writer for the project. “The script stays focused on the stories of these specific characters. It’s through them that we tackle these big issues.”

The project also utilizes a team of writers, as opposed to one individual playwright. “I’ve always been intrigued at how television scripts come from a team of writers, and [Umbrella Collective] has always been committed to creating work that represents different viewpoints and perspectives,” says Curl. “Most often, we’ve created work with actors. Here, we wanted to engage with different guest artists. I’ve been amazed at the amount of talent on this writing team. Everyone has their own creative style and sensibility, but even after heated discussions about character details or plot points or themes, we’ve stayed focused on what’s best for the story.”
