I know it says Hannah published this entry, but it's actually Mason here! The dust has settled. RAIN FOLLOWS THE PLOW is now a (lovely) memory, and a dream place to visit when this world fails to hold my attention. I must admit, this is a hard show to come down from, but one of the ideas I've taken away from this production is that change is good. And speaking of change, we have a whole new season of original work to share with you! Consider this a tiny taste of what is to come at small bites, BIG IDEAS. What is small bites, BIG IDEAS, you ask? Why, it's Savage Umbrella's season fundraiser, and it's right around the corner, y'all. Details are here and tickets are here. Get on it. Aside from good company and deliciousness all around, the thing I am most looking forward to at the fundraiser is the unveiling of our season art. The very best part is that the fabulous fundraiser guests get to vote on different designs created by wonderfully talented artist friends of ours. Because I want you to have SOMEthing to look at, I have taken it upon myself to create some placeholder art for the time being. Okay, time to announce the Savage Umbrella's 2013-2014 Season: First up, we are excited to bring back a re-imagining of LEAVES! LEAVES is a musical exploration of the American spirit, using Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass for inspiration. Whether you saw LEAVES back in the fall of 2010 or not, the script is getting a makeover, so there will be something new for everyone to enjoy. We will be following up LEAVES with a fully staged production of RAPTURE, which we workshopped this past fall with a badass team of writers. In RAPTURE, a tenth of the world’s population suddenly disappears. This isn’t a biblical event. It is pieced together that all those who vanished were, in some fashion, artists. RAPTURE explores what defines art and what it means to be an artist. The conversations after the readings were so rich and encouraging that we decided it is high time to put RAPTURE on its feet. Next up: a workshop presentation of THESE ARE THE MEN. A re-imagining of the Oedipus mythology, THESE ARE THE MEN examines the love, hope, and beauty tangled with the darkness of one of ancient Greece's greatest tragedies. Finally, we end our 2013-2014 season with a workshop presentation of JUNE. Set in pre-Stonewall America, JUNE explores the roles we play and the secrets we hide. Newlywed June is introduced to the darker (sexier?) side of life through a mysterious acquaintance. Will June be able to keep it together, or will things start to get out of control? If she's not careful, somebody might get hurt. If my cell phone pics were in the running for our season art, I'd totally vote for them. But they're not. That means you get to see and vote on three other takes on the season art from three different artists (each of them much my better)! But only if you join us for small bites, BIG IDEAS. Here's all the good stuff you need to know: small bites, BIG IDEAS
