You guys.

We totally can’t believe it, but you know what? It’s our tenth season. It’s true. Our first show was in July 2007, and here we are, heading into 2017, bursting with ideas and shows and so much love and gratitude for where we’ve been and where we’re going. In order to celebrate ten whole years, we are remounting four exciting productions from our history. Additionally, we continue making-making-doing-doing with a workshop of a brand new piece, as well as our second annual Night of New Works.

In which we scare you…

SWEET DREAMS, ALFIE
​OCTOBER 2016

Conceived by Russ Dugger
Directed by Laura Leffler-McCabe

SWEET DREAMS, ALFIE is psychological horror smeared with blood and pock-marked with brevity, embodying the claustrophobic, hopeless feeling that comes part-and-parcel with existential dread. City Pages called the October 2015 production, “a harrowing, immersive ride that offers more genuine, heartfelt scares than a hundred haunted houses packed with zombies, ghouls, and animated skeletons.” Presented as a part of the Twin Cities Horror Festival at the Southern Theater. Featuring Megan Clark, Russ Dugger, Claire Morrison, and Mark Sweeney.

THE AWAKENING
​FEBRUARY 2017

Adapted from the novel by Kate Chopin
Written and Directed by Laura Leffler-McCabe

THE AWAKENING transports us to turn-of-the-century New Orleans and the struggle of Edna Pontellier to find herself in a restrictive society. Critic Jay Gabler said of Savage Umbrella’s 2010 production, “"The Awakening is an amazing show: it had me on the edge of my seat, and on multiple occasions wanting to jump out of it with cheers.” Presented as part of ARTshare at the Southern Theater. Featuring Emily Dussault, Nick Wolf, Russ Dugger, and more.

NIGHT OF NEW WORKS
​MAY 2017

Led by Megan Clark

NIGHT OF NEW WORKS Savage Umbrella will offer space, time, and feedback to emerging theater makers interested in creating new work for the stage through collaborative processes. Applications available in January 2017, due in March 2017. The Night of New Works will be presented in May 2017 at Savage Umbrella’s SPACE.

VELVET SWING
JUNE 2017

Conceived and Directed by Alana Horton with Megan Clark

VELVET SWING is a workshop of a new project. Inspired by the sordid tale of Evelyn Nesbit, the original 19th Century supermodel and leading lady of the “Crime of The Century,” Velvet Swing focuses on truth and testimony, choice and circumstance, and the origin of the American Woman. Presented in June 2017 at Savage Umbrella’s SPACE.

In which we camp you…

EX-GAYS
​SEPTEMBER 2017

Written by Eric F. Avery
Directed by Laura Leffler-McCabe

EX-GAYS is set in fictional Camp Str8-N-Arrow, and follows Pastor Brian and the rest of the camp staff as they help campers turn off their homosexual feelings and turn on their Christian love of the heterosexual life. Critic Adam Whisner said of the 2011 production, “The show was wonderful. Hilarious, campy, silly, full of improv and scripted moments, but also packed a punch, revealing the devastating emotional consequences of this kind of thinking and the damage it can do to people who are duped by misguided religious zealotry. It's a solid, well-produced and executed piece of sociopolitical art. I absolutely recommend it.” Presented at Savage Umbrella’s SPACE. Featuring Eric F. Avery, Russ Dugger, and more.

In which we are all sisters…

THE RAVAGERS
​NOVEMBER 2017

Written by Blake E. Bolan and Laura Leffler-McCabe
Directed by Hannah K. Holman

THE RAVAGERS is loosely based on the ancient Greek play THE SUPPLIANTS by Aeschylus. Danaus is tyrant of Argos and has 50 daughters who are set to marry their 50 Egyptian cousins. To avoid giving up power to his future sons-in-law, Danaus tells his daughters to murder their new husbands on their wedding night. All do, except for one. THE RAVAGERS explores what happens when one daughter discovers herself at the precipice between obedience and resistance. Lavender called the 2011 production, “ingenious and hauntingly evocative.” Featuring Kathryn Fumie, Laura Leffler-McCabe, Russ Dugger, and more.
