Do you want to play in SPACE? by Hannah

6/25/2015

Calling all makers, movers, and shakers... it's time to play in SPACE! The applications for Savage Umbrella's Night of New Works are now available! We're so excited to launch this (mostly) new initiative, and we hope you'll hop on board. We'll have plenty of freeze dried snacks to share! Okay, it's not really that kind of space, but maybe someday...!

King of the Ad Hoc by Carl

6/9/2015

Blogger’s choice, oh blogger’s choice. The wheel of fortune furiously flapping through options to feature! What will it land on to spark this post to life? Amy Schumer being hilarious? Anne Bogart being profound? Curious podcasts like The Allusionist?

Maybe it lands on a question more mundane, like, “What are you doing this weekend?” If you watch that Bogart talk on storytelling, she quotes the philosopher Martin Buber in the most unexpected of circumstances - see if you can guess it from the quote:  “[T]he will to go out and the grace to receive. Extraordinary.” A mundane question about your weekend plans also has that charge to it - what will you get out to, and what will you have the grace to be open to?

I’ve been reading the recently departed David Carr (bless him) and his wrenchingly tragic and funny memoir The Night of the Gun. It has a line that has resonated with me - “As a parent, I was king of the ad hoc…” Time, more so than even in my frantic younger drinking days, feels stitched together erratically as a parent. Any action requires both extensive pre-planning and arrangement, as though we were setting off on a trans-Atlantic voyage, and can be changed at any moment, like the winds blowing us out of safe harbor. Regardless of our will, some weekends we make it to plays and out to see friends, other weekends we’re lucky if we make it to bed. The work is in the grace to accept what comes, and to be grateful for it.

Blogger's Choice: Permission is Paramount by Lisa

6/3/2015

I gotta say, I feel like I’ve gotten that gig at GLAMOUR that I lusted after at 16 years of age. It was 2002 and I still thought I was Kate Hudson in How to Lose a Man in 10 days. Remember when your dreams were as original as the movies you saw, books you read and T.V. shows you stared at? Mine were. A lot of them. I even wrote a Dawson’s Creek parody in 8th Grade with the deciduous help of my collaborator at the time, my best friend, Becca. Get to be 30 and you feel like you can now write about anything you want to write about. Anything. In my real and arguably less glamorous Kate Hudson-y version of present day Lisa-Hood- this opportunity has presented itself in 2015 as a Blogger’s Choice assignment for my SU fam and our amazing readers!
