Calling all makers, movers, and shakers... it's time to play in SPACE! The applications for Savage Umbrella's Night of New Works are now available! We're so excited to launch this (mostly) new initiative, and we hope you'll hop on board. We'll have plenty of freeze dried snacks to share! Okay, it's not really that kind of space, but maybe someday...! NIGHT OF NEW WORKS Call for ArtistsMISSION Savage Umbrella makes theater; we can’t help or stop ourselves. Savage Umbrella co-operates as a company to create new works of theater, constantly striving to engage artists and audiences in vital discourse. We believe theater is critical shelter, embodying compassionate space for relevant conversation. The Night of New Works is an extension of Savage Umbrella’s mission. We value collaboration, fresh voices and new plays, and want to create a supportive structure to make those things happen. Through the Night of New Works series, Savage Umbrella will offer support to emerging theater makers interested in creating new work for the stage through collaborative processes. PROJECT DETAILS The inaugural Night of New Works was held in 2012, and was a time for company members to create, to workshop, to play. Now, we’d like to open that opportunity to our community. The program is expanded to welcome three emerging makers to incubate, rehearse, and present a new work in progress, outside of the confines of a full-scale production. Three (3) participants will be paired with a Savage Umbrella co-pilot, who will provide their participant with critical response and conversation as well as reflection in the form of artist-to-artist feedback. This series is designed for makers who are interested in exploring staging and alternative creation, and who would benefit from an artistic sounding board. Solo artists or groups may apply. Applicants may submit as part of more than one proposal, as long as the projects are different. Participants are expected to present staged work (not a reading). This is not a series intended for playwrights who want to have a reading. Interdisciplinary, collaborative works are best suited for this program. In addition to theatre makers, playwrights, musicians, poets, painters, novelists, etc., who are interested in exploring and leading a collaborative theatrical process for the first time are encouraged to apply. We encourage diverse subject matter and forms of performance, and we highly encourage experimentation. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2015.
