With the fresh new year upon us, we look forward.
2016 was real rough for a lot of people, so I like to think about this quotation about the Thin White Duke who we lost last year: “In 1968, Bowie was a gay, ginger, bonk-eyed, snaggle-toothed freak walking around south London in a dress, being shouted at by thugs. Four years later, he was still exactly that — but everyone else wanted to be like him, too. If David Bowie can make being David Bowie cool, you can make you cool. Plus, unlike David Bowie, you get to listen to David Bowie for inspiration. So you're one up on him, really. You're already one ahead of David Bowie.” -- Caitlin Moran We are already one ahead of David Bowie, and now we look forward. We look at all these amazing artists working right here in our community (especially Sarah Rasmussen and Junauda Petrus). We look at our our friends who have amazing work coming up: Sandbox Theatre, Four Humors, Theatre Novi Most, and Theatre Forever. We look at all these exciting projects on the Savage Umbrella docket, shows that illuminate and celebrate independence, self-care, bravery against all odds, and beauty. “Now is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal. I know the world is bruised and bleeding, and though it is important not to ignore its pain, it is also critical to refuse to succumb to its malevolence. Like failure, chaos contains information that can lead to knowledge — even wisdom. Like art.” — Toni Morrison We take stock of what is around us, and then we at Savage Umbrella move, make, do. Over and over again. We work hard to create space that is safe and welcoming. We create work that is resonant and meaningful. We move, we make, we do. C’mon, 2017. LET’S GO. Comments are closed.
