Savage Umbrella is pleased to announce the 2015-16 participants of the Night of New Works project development series:
Through the Night of New Works series, Savage Umbrella will offer support to emerging theater makers interested in creating new work for the stage through collaborative processes. These three participants will be paired with a Savage Umbrella co-pilot, who will provide their participant with critical response and conversation as well as reflection in the form of artist-to-artist feedback. In addition to the artistic sounding board, participants will have access to Savage Umbrella’s technical resources, set, costume and prop stock, and rehearsal space, as well as a split of the total box office profits. “Our Twin Cities community is brimming with talented, emerging theatre makers, and we are thrilled to help support the continuation of new work in our community,” says Artistic Director Laura Leffler-McCabe. “We value collaboration, fresh voices and new plays, and want to create a supportive structure to make those things happen through the Night of New Works program. The projects that Harrison, Katie, and David and Katherine proposed are exciting and also reflect our values of sensitivity to social, environmental, and historical context. We can’t wait to see what happens.” What a mind-bending couple of weeks it's been! SWEET DREAMS, ALFIE has been up and running (for its life) and the reviews are killer! Ed Huyck of the City Pages says "...Alfie is a harrowing, immersive ride that offers more genuine, heartfelt scares than a hundred haunted houses packed with zombies, ghouls, and animated skeletons." ... and Talkin' Broadway's Arty Dorman asserts that "...for those with the stamina to live, even for an hour, in Alfie's nightmare, it is an important, well-wrought work of theater." Talking about why you want to produce a particular piece of art can be a difficult thing. It varies by degrees, of course. Maybe you’re drawn to a particular element, like the music. Maybe you know it will be a popular choice that will bring in the most patrons. Maybe it speaks to something that’s happening in the news. Or maybe it’s something brand new. Something that clawed its way up your intestines, past your stomach and lungs and heart and up your throat until it’s peering through your lips waiting for the right moment to reveal itself, naked and raw. A barely formed welp that you hold out to a group of friends and colleagues for their thoughts and opinions, secretly hoping that they don’t point out that it has your eyes or nose. Because it has more of you in it than you want to admit. Because it scares you. That’s why I wanted to produce Alfie. As we continue on our existential deep dive with SWEET DREAMS, ALFIE (opening October 8th... seating is limited, so reserve your spots!) and bask in the excitement of our brand new company members, we have another awesome announcement... We have a new crush... Oops! I meant to say CAST! Announcing the ensemble for our upcoming production of JUNE! *swoon* If you attended the workshop presentations in July 2014, you'll notice a bunch of brand new characters (as well as some familiar faces!). These women are all so incredible and smart and talented, we can't wait to get in a room with them to dig into the story, ask a lot of questions, and make some new work. Seriously, so dreamy. Crush. on. all. of. them. Join us under the umbrella in February 2016 to see June as part of ARTshare at the Southern Theater. I recently returned from an 11-day road trip through the Alps and central Europe. Lucky, lucky me. Early in the trip, in a moment of complete accident and profound delight, I found myself face-to-face with a wall. Well, the surviving bit of the southern facade of a wall. It's the most impressive part of the remains of the Roman Theatre in Aosta, Italy, built some time around 25 BC. As we continue to grow and change and learn and adapt on our journey to live the best artistic lives we can, Savage Umbrella is thrilled to announce an expansion of our company.
We simultaneously felt the need to spread and reach artistically, and at the same time, hone and focus our core administration and support systems. I couldn't be more excited for both of these opportunities; it feels like refinement and precision paired with wild experimentation and abandon. The juxtaposition is thrilling. We introduce our new(ish) Core Company: members who have dedicated time, talent, and focus to the development of Savage Umbrella's methods for years. These Core Company Members will continue with Savage Umbrella in the areas of administration, artistic development, and leadership: Russ Dugger, Heidi Jedlicka Halvarson, Hannah K. Holman, Laura Leffler-McCabe, and Carl Atiya Swanson.
Howdy folks! I know. It's been a while. We missed you too <3
But worry not! We're back with some of those delightful behind-the-scenes goodies you've come to expect, nay, demand as part of your weekly umbrella fix.
