Well! After a rambunctious 6 weeks of workshop creation, Penelope can finally be put to bed for some well-earned beauty sleep until she's ready to metamorphose into some be-winged future incarnation. We Umbrella Fella's feel about ready for 40 winks ourselves. We know, we know. Tis the season for lists upon lists of Fringe shows offered up by people and groups you know only in the politest of circumstances with the hopes that maybe, just maybe, you will grace them with your patronage and attention. It's a yearly Minnesotan tradition second only to the flood of emails and requests that choke your inbox and Facebook feed during Give to the Max Day*. *No shade meant. GTMD is one of the most important days of the year for us Non-Profs so please, please give all you can. When you can ;) Penelope waited over 10 years for her husband, Odysseus, to return from the Trojan War; all the while dodging 108 opportunistic suitors squatting in her home. Woof. Count your blessings. You only have to wait 2 more days to see what we've created for the Penelope Workshop! But hey. We understand that 2 days can seem like forever when your excited for something. That's why the cast and collaborators wanted to share some of the words that they think of when they think back on all the work they've done to make Penelope special. Fangirling, Workshopping, and Multiple NarrativesThis week, we decided to turn the blog over to two of our fabulous, talented, wonderful, hilarious collaborators! (Can you tell we just love, love, love them?!) You may recognize Alana from our recent production of These Are the Men at the Southern Theater in March/April (yay, ARTshare!) and Rachel lent us her talents for the workshop presentation of House Party back in November 2014.
We are so thrilled to have them back in the room playing and creating for the Penelope Workshop. Come see their work on July 24 & 25 at Savage Umbrella's SPACE. Rehearsals for our Penelope workshop are under way and things are going so well/fun/awesome/inspiringly! We have some smart cookies in the room, bringing up issues of everything from how culture defines the ideal woman, to the visualization of internal turmoil, to the power of storytelling and Greek myths, to possession and power, to how humor works to help soothe pain and trauma, to how that one guy on a toilet got eaten by a dinosaur in the original Jurassic Park. We’ve got more info for you in the coming weeks, but enjoy these snaps and vids from rehearsals for now! Calling all makers, movers, and shakers... it's time to play in SPACE! The applications for Savage Umbrella's Night of New Works are now available! We're so excited to launch this (mostly) new initiative, and we hope you'll hop on board. We'll have plenty of freeze dried snacks to share! Okay, it's not really that kind of space, but maybe someday...! NIGHT OF NEW WORKS Call for ArtistsWe’re bursting at the seams to share the news about our newest project, PENELOPE. We’ve assembled a team of awesome artists who’re starting with some awesome source material and awesome influences to create an awesome show. Awesomely. AWESOME SOURCE MATERIAL
Blogger’s choice, oh blogger’s choice. The wheel of fortune furiously flapping through options to feature! What will it land on to spark this post to life? Amy Schumer being hilarious? Anne Bogart being profound? Curious podcasts like The Allusionist? Maybe it lands on a question more mundane, like, “What are you doing this weekend?” If you watch that Bogart talk on storytelling, she quotes the philosopher Martin Buber in the most unexpected of circumstances - see if you can guess it from the quote: “[T]he will to go out and the grace to receive. Extraordinary.” A mundane question about your weekend plans also has that charge to it - what will you get out to, and what will you have the grace to be open to?
I gotta say, I feel like I’ve gotten that gig at GLAMOUR that I lusted after at 16 years of age. It was 2002 and I still thought I was Kate Hudson in How to Lose a Man in 10 days. Remember when your dreams were as original as the movies you saw, books you read and T.V. shows you stared at? Mine were. A lot of them. I even wrote a Dawson’s Creek parody in 8th Grade with the deciduous help of my collaborator at the time, my best friend, Becca. Get to be 30 and you feel like you can now write about anything you want to write about. Anything. In my real and arguably less glamorous Kate Hudson-y version of present day Lisa-Hood- this opportunity has presented itself in 2015 as a Blogger’s Choice assignment for my SU fam and our amazing readers! |
