ABOUT THE SHOW An American classic set against the backdrop of 1930s depression-era St. Louis, The Glass Menagerie is the gut-wrenching story of the Wingfield family. Tom, an aspiring poet, toils away his days in a shoe factory in order to support his debilitatingly shy sister, Laura, and mother, Amanda, a southern Belle who was forced into single motherhood when her husband left 16 years previous. Torn between duty to his family and the expectations of society, Tom must decide whether to stay and perish or pursue his own life path. The Glass Menagerie, winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, "...captures better than any play the claustrophobic reality of family life, with its jostling interests, imposing expectations, burdensome concern and overwhelming love." (Los Angeles Times). More info on their website. Tickets: $18 - 25 Please contact Theatre Coup d'Etat with questions. Afterwind // Off-Leash AreaCreated by the ensemble Performances July 21 - 24, 28 - 31 Part performance, part installation, all awesome. Seriously, these folks do incredible work and we can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves. AND IT'S NEW WORK! You know how jazzed we get about that. ABOUT OFF-LEASE AREA Off-Leash Area is committed to uphold the transformative power of the live performance experience, trusting in the intelligence and capability of its audience to follow them on each new journey of the imagination. Their work often centers on a central character who resides in a marginalized place in society – a combat veteran, an immigrant child, a young woman suffering the onset of mental illness – and builds an experiential visual journey around this character that is uniquely presented, and universally recognizable. The focus on the individual in face of societal and life obstacles creates an intensely compressed emotional space between artist and audience. This is a space where artistic creativity is maximized in order to venture into unique performative dimensions where anything is possible, and a naturalistic presentation of everyday reality and the normal passage of time gives way to an out of body experience, which many audiences have described as otherworldly, and even spiritual. If there is any one theme that runs through all their work it is a belief in the resilience of the individual human spirit as it seeks to achieve growth and fulfillment in the face of personal and societal barriers. Keep an eye on Off-Leash for ticket details. Please contact Off-Leash Area with questions. See you in SPACE!Comments are closed.
