I recently attended an invigorating (and terrifying) discussion about capacity building in the arts (buzz word alert!). The all-star panel included Randy Reyes (Theater Mu), Abdo Sayegh Rodriguez (TU Dance), DeAnna Cummings (Juxtaposition Arts), Julie Guidry (Upstream Arts), Peter Rothstein (Theater Latte Da), and was moderated by the inimitable Leah Cooper (MN Theater Alliance). (Shout out to MRAC for putting it together!) What. A. Group. We discussed values and story-telling, finances and liabilities, and growing pains in small nonprofits. All the insights and honesty the panel provided were incredible, but my biggest takeaway was this: Risks are challenges. Challenges are opportunities. And if you never have a challenge, you never have the opportunity to do something extraordinary. Well, Savage Umbrella is ready to do something big. Something scary. Something extraordinary. We’re ready to carve out our little corner of the world and we hope you’ll join us. Announcing… That's right... SAVAGE UMBRELLA HAS A NEW HOME! Studio 306 - Vandalia Tower 558 Vandalia St Saint Paul, MN 55114 And yep, we're calling it SPACE because it has room to breathe and infinite possibilities. It's exciting. It's an experiment. And it's real. We have the keys and everything! (Don't worry, we're still pinching ourselves, too!) When we found out at 12:15 a.m. on November 14, 2014 that we were about to be the luckiest little lizards in the whole wide world, we knew we had to seize this ephemeral opportunity. We wanted to find a way to create more time and space to experiment, challenge ourselves and our collaborators to grow artistically, and support this incredible Twin Cities new work community in new and exciting ways. If you know a new work creator or performer, you’ve probably heard the laments of “we just need more time in the space”, “but where will we rehearse?”, and “if only we had $1,000 to rent an awesome space for a weekend!” Oh, the things we would do with a few square feet to call our own. Finding a place to call home for a rehearsal process or a weekend of workshops is sometimes like searching for a golden needle in a very expensive haystack. We hope that SPACE can be that home: a place for Savage Umbrella to take more risks in process, content, and programming, and for other artists and companies to share, collaborate, make, and thrive. We want to be able to share this space with our friends and peers making new work in the Twin Cities, so stay tuned for programming opportunities coming up this year. You’ll also notice from the photos that SPACE is a big raw warehouse space right now. If you have anything you're not using anymore that you think we might need - rugs, tables, chairs, lamps, shelves, wood, etc. - send us an email at info@savageumbrella.org. If you donate your precious used things to us, you can come visit them all the time! And again, we can’t thank our donors, GiveMN.org, and the Bush Foundation enough for all of your generosity, for the Golden Ticket, and for making all of this possible. We make theater here because we can’t help or stop ourselves, and we can’t wait to make SPACE the place for all of us to play together. If you want to make a contribution to help, head on over to www.savageumbrella.org/support. Every little bit helps, always. We’re ready to do something bold, awesome, and a little bit scary. Will you join us? Because, let’s be honest, it’s a lot less scary if we’re all under the umbrella together. As we always say, together is better than alone.
So... CHEERS! To a new year, new digs, new adventures. LET'S GO! Comments are closed.
